FlowSave Commercial — Smarter Water. Lower Costs.

Your Building Could Be Flushing Money Down the Drain.

Discover smarter commercial washroom solutions designed to reduce flushing water consumption, address conventional flushing-system maintenance and improve operational efficiency.

For commercial facilities in Toronto, the GTA and across Ontario.

A conventional flush valve. Every use draws clean, treated water.

10 urinals× 50 uses a day× 3.8 L a flush× 260 days= 494,000 L a year

Every flush is paid for twice

Ontario municipalities charge commercial customers for the water a building uses and again for the wastewater it sends to the sewer, both by the cubic metre. A flushing urinal adds to both lines on every use.

One urinal used 50 times a day, five days a week, at 3.8 litres a flush sends about 49,400 litres of clean water to the drain each year. Multiply that by every urinal on every floor and in every location.

Flushing hardware adds its own costs: valves and sensors that drift, run on, leak or fail, and the service calls and out-of-order signs that follow.

Waterless urinals take the flush out of the equation

A waterless urinal has no water supply and no flush valve. Urine drains by gravity through a replaceable odour trap that seals the drain between uses.

The fixture still connects to the building's drain, and it still needs cleaning and servicing. What goes away is the flushing water and the flushing hardware.

What changes for your facility

  • No flushing water

Urinals stop drawing water on every use, which removes that volume from both your water and wastewater charges.

  • No flush valves to fail

There are no valves, diaphragms or flush sensors at the fixture to stick, leak, run on or need adjustment.

  • A planned routine instead of reactive repairs

Maintenance becomes routine cleaning and scheduled trap replacement that your team or contractor can plan around.

  • Measurable for sustainability reporting

The water avoided is straightforward to estimate per fixture, which helps when owners, tenants or brands ask for water data.

Calculate your potential savings

Enter your own figures. The estimate covers flushing water avoided and the variable water and wastewater charges on that volume. It is not a quote.

These starting points are hypothetical illustrations, not measured averages for Ontario buildings. Replace any value with your facility's figures; low usage and 0.5 L fixtures are fine.

Current litres per flush

Flush valves are usually marked with a rating in US gallons (GPF) or litres (LPF). 1 US gallon ≈ 3.785 L.

How waterless systems operate

In URIMAT urinals, urine passes through a replaceable odour trap with a vertical membrane. The membrane opens under flow and closes when the flow stops, keeping drain air out of the washroom.

A cleaning block built into the trap dissolves slowly to limit deposits in the trap and drain line. When it has gone, a coloured surface under the trap's clear cover shows that the trap needs replacing.

Maintenance and odour control, plainly

Waterless doesn't mean maintenance-free. It means a different routine, and the routine is what keeps a washroom fresh.

  • Routine cleaningBowls are cleaned with a compatible cleaner. URIMAT recommends its biological, pH-neutral MB-ActiveCleaner; ask the supplier which products to avoid.
  • Trap replacementThe whole trap cartridge is replaced when its indicator shows. URIMAT gives an average trap life of 7,000 to 8,000 uses, so frequency follows traffic.
  • Drain line checksWithout flush water, urine sludge can collect in pipes over time. Periodic rinsing and checks belong in the servicing plan.
  • The rest of the washroomMost washroom odour comes from floors, walls, joints, dry floor drains and ventilation. An assessment looks at those too.

Questions facility teams ask

Do waterless urinals smell?

A waterless urinal relies on a sealed odour trap instead of a water-filled one. Odour control depends on that trap being in good condition, on routine cleaning with compatible products, and on replacing the trap when it reaches the end of its life. The manufacturer also points to common causes of washroom odour that have nothing to do with the urinal itself: urine on floors and walls, poor ventilation, dry floor drains and dirty tile joints. An assessment looks at all of these.

Are waterless urinals maintenance-free?

No. They remove flushing water and flush valves, not maintenance. Bowls are cleaned routinely with compatible products, odour-trap cartridges are replaced periodically, and drain lines are checked as part of servicing. URIMAT states that its odour traps last an average of 7,000 to 8,000 uses, so a busy urinal needs a new trap more often than a quiet one.

Can our existing flushing urinals be replaced with waterless ones?

Often, but it depends on what is behind the wall. Drain condition, drain slope, rough-in heights and mounting all matter. URIMAT's installation instructions call for existing drain pipes to be professionally cleaned when water-flushed urinals are replaced, and for drains not to slope backwards. A licensed plumber should confirm suitability on site.

Are waterless urinals allowed under Ontario building and plumbing requirements?

Approval rests with the local authority having jurisdiction, and requirements can include documentation about the product and its maintenance. We raise this early in every assessment, ask the supplier for the relevant certification documents, and expect your plumber to confirm permit requirements with the municipality before any work starts.

How much could we save?

It depends on how many urinals you have, how often they are used, how much water they flush now and your municipality's water and wastewater rates. The savings calculator estimates the flushing water avoided and the variable utility charges on that volume. It does not include purchase, installation, cleaning products, replacement traps or servicing, which the assessment adds.

What does a waterless urinal cost?

We don't publish prices because they depend on the model, quantity, site conditions and installation work. After the assessment, a supplier or installer can quote for your facility so you can compare the full cost with the estimated savings.

Is FlowSave Commercial the manufacturer?

No. FlowSave Commercial is a commercial partner of URIMAT. We help Ontario organizations evaluate commercial washroom water efficiency and coordinate qualified enquiries with suitable suppliers and installers. URIMAT products are made by URIMAT Schweiz AG.

What happens to my enquiry?

Your enquiry comes to FlowSave Commercial first. We review it and contact you. If you want to go ahead, we share the relevant details with URIMAT or a supplier or installation partner only to respond to your assessment request, as described in our privacy policy.

Do waterless urinals need electricity?

Standard URIMAT models do not. The manufacturer notes that models with video displays and its automatic cleaning system need a power supply.

What happens in the drain pipe without flush water?

URIMAT says urine scale does not form without flush water, but urine sludge can collect over time and is removed with water during servicing. That is why drain checks belong in the maintenance plan.
